GIRL SCOUTS and the STEAM Effort
Girl Scouts USA has come a long way since it was founded back in 1912. As we enter the 21st Century, the organization is keeping pace with the new challenges that affect girls across the United States and around the globe. The introduction and emphasis on STEM and STEAM is definitely major, but some things about the Girl Scouts organization will never change.
Cookies and campfires. Sashes and sing-a-longs. A girl earning badges, camping out and making dandelion wishes for growing-up to be an astronaut, a ballerina, an engineer, an artist, ANYTHING she wants... and making it happen.
This is Girl Scouting.
A hallmark of the Girl Scout organization is that it is girl-led. It provides opportunities for girls to learn and grow... and to be leaders. Malerie is a great example.
Between the ages of 15 and 17, she earned the Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest award in all of Girl Scouting (equivalent to the Boy Scout's Eagle Scout Award). Malerie's Gold Award project was called "Music Counts: Changing Lives through the Performing Arts."
"Music Counts" eventually evolved into The E.S.T.E.A.M. Initiative. Click here to go to Photo Gallery to see pictures of Music Counts and E.S.T.E.A.M.
